I have just noticed a problem with my tilt trim. When I put it in the water yesterday I trimmed it down to start it and it started down but studdering while doing so. It seems slower coming up also but after running up and down a couple of times it trims up and down fine. If it sits for 10-15 minutes the same problem occurs. I have charged the battery thinking it had a low charge but that doesn't seem to be the problem. I just don't understand the studdering affect. I did check the hydraulic fluid and it is fine. Any help?

I would guess you're getting air in the system somewhere. Check your lines for tightness, maybe spray some soapy water around any/all hoses and the ram itself(could be sucking air around ram cylinder). Check the fluid immediately after cycling the tilt, if you have foamy fluid --you've got air getting in. Any rubber hoses in the system are more succeptible to problems than steel lines.

He doesnt have any rubber hoses and the system is self bleeding. The slow TNT out could be a couple things. If the resevoir is full as you say, determine (by listening) if the trim motor is operating at a normal speed. If it is running at a normal speed, cycle the motor in both directions to allow any trapped air to be removed. Ensure that the manual release valve is closed tightly. Then remove the manual release snap ring, remove the vavle core, and check the o ring and valve seal. If those check out, there are a couple valves in your system that you need to check for full and free movement of the core, clogged outlets, and dirt, chips in the seat area holding the valve open. The valves are located below your resevoir. If they check out, you need to replace your pump. Now back to the trim motor. If the motor is not running at a normal speed, check the battery and connections (which you say you did). Remove the motor from the manifold and run it again. If it now runs at a normal speed, the pump needs to be replaced. If it continues to run slow, the motor either needs a rebuild or to be replaced.

Re: 1998 johnson 115 tilt trim problem

I was going to pull the tt unit out tomorrow to replace motor. But last night I thought maybe a few taps from a hammer would shake things up in there. I know it works for starters so I gave it a shot and it worked. I have ran the motor up and down numberous times since last night and have had no other issues. So if any of you out there are having similar issues, wrap on it with a hammer a few times maybe it will work for you too.
