I totally agree with you!! when you really get into the machines & start to understand it; they are great to have and work on.
(the proper manual is a must!!)

Transom.
Tilt the motor up, then try pushing it up and down and see if the transom moves.
Just you pushing up and down shouldn't move the motor.

I would not dare to do that on mine

Regarding the motor, they can usually be fixed up to start/run really nice. Downside is, they're generally regarded as about the noisiest motor out there....

Most likely due to the deteriorated foam insulation in the cowl.
any remaining SHOULD be removed immediately! (it will get sucked-up by the carbs.)
I replaced mine with sound-absorbing blanket material, that worked really well. On idle (only) she sounds like a 4-stroke

I don't see many of the bigger motors, but the 40hp twins I see most never had mufflers on the carbs - which contributes a huge amount of noise. Hood insulation might help some, but an effective way of muting that carb, or carbs would be an enormous help as well....
