While cleaning the motor I came across two brown wires that are unplugged. Can anyone tell me what they're for and if they should be connected to each other? Thanks for any help you can give!

That's funny, I have the same question. I also found those two wires.
One tan, and one brown with white stripe. I have no clue.
I have a 94 Force 120HP.

Mine are connected to each other. I have a 1998 Mercury Force 75 HP.

Re: 1998 Force 75HP unconnected brown wires

I have a 1998 75hp & the tan and tan/white wire are not connected. Asked my machanic & he said it is not used. Looked in the manual and the wiring diagram shows the tan wire as a spare. It runs up to the forward controls but doesn't connect to anything. Can't find the tan/white wire on diagrams anywhere.

May be used in a non standard setup.

Hopefully someone will know the answer.

From the wiring diagram in my Clymer manual, it looks like the Brown/White wire is for an optional trim indicator. The Tan lead goes to the accessories connector under the dash. It depends on what year and the type of set up you have as far as what it's actually used for in your particular case. Either way, it looks like they are probably for optional accessories. That's my guess.
