My boat has a 1997 90 hp Johnson SPL. I have a chance to buy another motor same year only an evinrude. The ad is as follows.

“Bought in 2017 had it rebuilt have paper work start and run had a miss took it to mid Kansas marina did scope compression is good cylinder 3 and 4 not firing has a short tilt not working should get all the cables. We bought a new motor there. MAKE OFFER need GONE.”
Compression readings are 105-110-100-100. These are not verified but what he said the shop told him.

He is asking $600 with controls. Is this worth it? If the motor is bad, is there such a thing as a core charge? Am I going to be out $600 or can I at least break even? New again to the boat game, spent way more on my boat than I wanted and am trying to possibly recoup some money.

Thanks in advance!

Personally I wouldn’t even be thinking about it.
6 bills for a 27 year old motor that’s not in good health is likely a bad plan.

Not terrible but a bit low in my eyes.
If that’s what they really are. If you can’t check for yourself don’t believe it.

I can check when I get there, it’s about an hour from me. Sounds like I should steer clear

My opinion...it kinds smells, that being said if you have the time and the knowledge check it out. Also, asking price isn't always the buy price.

If time is money to you, do the lower offer before you go.

Isn't yours the 88 SPL?

Either way, it's called rolling the dice.

Sounds like whoever rebuilt it did not fix the original problem of why it failed the first time...$300-400 at best
