I have a 1998 Bayliner Capri 2050. I have had it in the shop 3 times in the past year. We had some water coming in, it caused wood rot under the seats, got it repaired. Then noticed i could step thru just behind passenger seat next to drivers seat. Got floor repaired, each time I had new rubber/gromits/engine seals put on because I was told we must have holes there. Just put in the lake yesterday, took it for a brief ride, made on big left turn and water poored in but the bilge, and where the motor is were totally dry. Now I reading threads that lead me to believe that my problem is in the "rub rail". Has anyone else found that by turning sharp VERY large amounts of water can come in the rub rail. I think this is due to my sons banging the sides while driving the boat (without me of course) and cuaseing big gaps in this part of the boat...is this possible.

welcome to iboats!

i guess anything is possible. you could try going round it with a hose and try and find the weak spot? can't relly fix it until you know where its getting in.

Take a friend or 2 out with you and make the same turn and have them back there to have eyes on exactly where its coming in to help pinpoint the issue.

If its truly 'pouring' in...it should be pretty obvious. *Usually* a leaking rub rail leak is more of a 'seep' than water freely flowing in. Do you have any side engine bay vents or other possibilities?

Go out at dark with a flashlight and look from the inside out with a friend.

You'll see the light where the leak is. :)

Bayliner....thats your first problem.

If you do find that your rub rail is leaking......you could possibly have a lot of work on your hands. If it's more complex than sealing the inside of the seam, you'll have to remove the majority of the rub rail and seal is up with either Marine Tex or 3M 4200 compound........or even some kitchen silicone.

I had a similiar problem with my Bayliner 1950 Capri. The deck had actually seperated from the hull in a spot behind the rubrail. Believe it or not it was not obvious to see and after $400.00 in shop fees, finally found problem. The "real" fix would have cost thousands of dollars, so I opted to seal it with a 3m marine sealant. I used it for 2 seasons afterword with no problems, but ended up selling it to upgrade because I couldn't help but feel unsafe with the hull seperation. The guy I sold it to was a pretty handy guy and stripped the rubrail off, split the deck and hull and resealed and screwed the whole thing. He's had the boat for over 10 years with no further issues. I've been told its part of "cheap" boat syndrome and a lot of lower end boats i.e. bayliners, glasstrons, stingrays, etc are prone to things like this due to cheaper manufacturing processes.

It sounds like you might have some hull damage from the kids' game of "bumper boats". I like Summer Fun's flashlight idea to find the opening.
