1998 90HP Merc 2 stroke- Lower Unit Nuts- Brass or Stainless

I had my unit off, one of the brass lock nuts is cracked, can I replace with a SS lock nut? The brass were on the motor when I bought it with a boat in 2003, I assume they are original.

Gee, I have never seen brass nuts on a Merc. Normally they would be SS nylon lock nuts.
