1998 40 hp force lower unit removal

I have a 1998 40 hp force engine and have removed all the nuts and bolts but I need to know how to unhook the shifting rod.

After removing the 5 bolts, loosen the jam nut and coupler half way down the shift rod.

Do I need to have the shifter in forward,neutral or reverse when I loosen the retaining nut from the shift rod?

I usually put it in forward.
I also use a sharpie marker and draw a line along the shift rod, over the nut and coupler, and back onto the rod on the other side.

This will help to get it properly aligned when you assemble it.
