Re: 1998 25 hp Mercury - Not Peeing

Well she is pissing! It ended up being a combination of the copper water infeed tube not being set in the boot and a lack of appropriate suction with the muffs (as you can tell I don't know the right names for anything, I just call them what they look like). I thought the muffs would be fine since we use them for my buddys 150hp, but his fit on a flat surface and I have a contour that wont let it fit right. Got the copper tube set right and held the muffs tight and she was flowing like crazy. I am going to go ahead and replace as many parts as I can though since I am now thouroughly famaliar with the inner workings.

Thanks everybody for all the help. I have a feeling I will be picking yalls brain quite a bit.

Good Job!......Enjoy that motor and run the heck out of it. Keep it serviced (we can walk you through that as well) and it'll run forever and tear the water up doing it.

Unfortunately I got it going about 5 minutes before we left so I can't take it out like I really want to. I will let y'all know how it runs on Monday though. I'm making a trip to bass pro today so I plan on stocking uP on some boat schwag.

The intermittent peeing could be a thermostat problem if you have one. Try running it without the thermostat. It should be a steady stream. If it's still intermittent then I would guess look for clogs maybe down the copper infeed tube.

I went from the easiest stuff to check first to the hardest.

Re: 1998 25 hp Mercury - Not Peeing

I used to own a 1994 Mariner 25HP. Had the same issue when I first bought it. I had replaced a bad water pump impeller, then saw no pee stream. Took it back apart and also removed the thermostat housing. I tested the thermostat in a pot of water on the stove, worked fine, opened when it should. I also noticed the the thermostat housing has a tiny bypass hole in it, that water should barely get through, all the time. It had some sand in it, I cleaned it out. After I reassembled everything, seemed not much different. Had what looked like hot water/steam coming out from the pee hose, but then as the motor came up to temp, it would cycle on/off a strong pee stream when the thermostat opened or closed. The water I had going to it was quite cold. All the small motors I had prior to this did not have thermostats. I believe it was working as designed, but of course, I'm not an expert.
