1997 Yamaha C90 Two Stroke Reverse Noise

My engine goes into forward and reverse with zero problems. Sounds normal. However, when I shift into reverse and give it some rpms It make a loud ratcheting sound and pops out of gear. Any thoughts?

Water pump was replaced but it was occurring before then. Yes, lower unit gear oil OK. Cable I cannot say that it was last adjusted maybe in a long time ago.

Yes, in normal operation. Docking or maneuvering.

I believe that motor like most Yamahas I have played with are spring loaded into forward.
you have to overcome the spring to get to neutral and reverse.

put the controller into neutral,
disconnect the cable at the motor
make sure the motor lower unit and linkages are in the neutral position detent.
see if the cable lines up to go back on the linkage.

if that looks good,
I have found the shift shaft twisted and the pin thru the prop shaft bent in a C60 .
apparently, someone tried real hard to shift into reverse while the motor was not turning the shaft to help line up the shift dogs.
or maybe your shift dog and gear have some rounded off edges causing it to not hold into reverse under high load

Well I did what you told me and adjusted the shift linkage. It was only off by a tiny bit. It still makes the same noise when you apply the throttle in reverse.
