1997 Mercury Optimax 2.5L 200hp 2 stroke DFI

Im hoping you guys can help me out because im not a mechanic and im about to throw in the towel.

Bought the boat a few months ago. When I had bought it it had the collapsed inter liner of the fuel line so the boat would only run at idle. Replaced the bulb and the lines. after that I would take it out and it would get on plane and pretty much top at 4500 rpms. After research I knew that I should be going a lot faster than that at WOT.

so I rebuilt the fuel pump with the diaphragm kit and replaced the fuel filter (also I run premium fuel and it is very clean and fresh). The next time I took it out, It ran perfect. Out of the hull super fast and was running at 5500 rpms. after fishing for a bit and wanting to move spots, I would turn on the motor and it would barely stay running. At throttle it bogs/shakes and barely, if at all, get on plane.

So then I replaced the spark plugs and did a compression check. All cylinders were right at or damn close to 110psi. Tested the spark plugs and I found #6 was not getting spark after putting multiple plugs through that cylinder. As a result I replaced the coil for that cylinder. when I took it out the next day it again planed off ok the first run then after fishing then moving it wouldn't stay running or let me go much over 1000 rpms.

I do not understand how it will CONSISTENTLY idle perfectly fine and run fine during first start but after that it will barely run. Any help is greatly appreciated.

P.S. last time I went out it seemed like my motor was flooding while trying to crank it. don't see how that's possible.

Welcome to iboats

Since that is a DI, engine and there is a Computer Controlling it, I recommend you take it to a Mercury Dealer. Throwing parts at is going to get expensive. From what you wrote, it runs fine on the Initial Run, from a Cold Start. Might be a Heat Soak issue on some of the Electronics, as your problem consistently happens after you have run the Engine, then let it sit for a while, then try running it again.

That’s good info thank you. I think I’m gonna just count my losses and send it in 😞

Optimax's have a belt driven compressor, as they use both fuel pressure and air pressure to drive the gasoline into the cylinders. You might check the air filter on the compressor.

A Mercury Optimax mechanic can put a diagnostic device on the motor, as well as pressure gauges on the air and fuel rails. These will help diagnose the issue.
