Hello,

Looking at buying a 1997 Mercury 200 Offshore motor with 287hrs. - according to owner.

Can this be verified electronically?

Are these considered to be good motors and is there anything specific to double check.

What are good compression #'s to see?

I'm experienced with motors, but nothing this new.

ANY help would be appreciated!!

Thanks,
Mike

No... There is no ECM on these engines..

In my opinion, yes, great engines. Take a VERY close look at the spark plugs. If they're really clean, the engine may need to have the exhaust and head gaskets changed.

You're looking for even readings around 120-140psi, no more than 10psi variation in adjacent cylinders.

Thanks Achris!!

Is there a way to check the compression without the motor sparking?

I'm guessing it has a lanyard. Would that do the trick?

I believe the motor has carbs., not that it matters.

Does it use a standard spark plug wrench?

Thanks,
Mike

Yes, just flip the toggle switch above the key on the control box...

Probably. You didn't give a serial number so we can't verify that. You be able to see it when you remove the cowl for the compression test.
