1997 Johnson

Going to look at a 1997 Johnson to replace my 1984 Johnson; the owner of the 1997 Johnson says runs well but won't idle. The owner thinks it is a dirty carb; what could this indicate? Once have been told it could be a sensor in the control box. Is there one, or could it be that the lower seals are leaking? Trying to do some homework before I purchase

Thanks, I was going to check the compression coils, lower unit, and maybe take a chance, I'm a pretty good back yard mechanic, but for 1500.00 you are right, a qualified professional is needed

A 1997 Johnson would be a standard carb 2 stroke engine. If the compression is good, the spark is good, and the gearcase is good. The rest can be fixed, if you can do the work yourself.

Depending on the HP, the only sensors are overheat, low oil, no oil and perhaps fuel restriction.

These motors usually have 1 carb/cylinder or at least 1 carb throat/cylinder, depending on model. You will therefore need to clean and rebuild 6 carbs for a V6 engine. So price your offer accordingly, and buy a service manual as well.

You will want to replace the waterpump as well..
