Re: 1997 Johnson 150 losing fire

Does sound like you have a dodgy powerpack but hard to verify until you swap it out. The sensor is cheaper but chances are if you tap directly on the powerpack and it fixes the problem, then it is most likely the powerpack.

Have you checked the connectors going to the powerpack, i.e. unplugged and replugged them? Intermittent connections can change with temp as well as things expand and contract.

Re: 1997 Johnson 150 losing fire

Chris. Chances are it's your powerpack. These are prone to causing problems on these motors. The standard test for the powerpack is to check that you are getting output voltage on each ignition coli primary lead as you crank the motor. You need to connect a 10 ohm 10 watt resistor load across each lead as you do the test and you should read more than 100V peak voltage output. This will tell you if you're not getting a spark signal to any coil. However, there's no real way to test for powerpack internal electronics faults which could lead to intermittent faulty behaviour. You really need to swap out the powerpack.

If it's not your powerpack it could be the optical sensor which is faulty. However, since you can fix the problem by tapping around the powerpack it suggests the problem is in the powerpack but you won't know for sure until you put a new one in!

There is a good ignition system troubleshooting guide which you can download from www.rapair.com if you want to read more about the ignition system on these motors.
