At times the motor runs like a top and sometimes it misses and cuts a shine and sometimes it wont start till you peck litely on the coils . I have replaced the coils and unhooked the black and yellow striped wire with no results . the motor also sounds like its spitting out air at idle , kinda sounds like an air leak just for a sec. pssssh< kinda the sound it makes. does anyone know what the problem might be or ever had this happen before . im really confused what to do but i dont want to spend loads of money trying to fix this any help will be very grateful . pecking the coils make you think its a loose ground but all grounds are tight , do you think it could be the power pack or possiable its the stator. thanks for the help anyone ! chris

Could be an intermittent connection in the OIS optical sensor or possibly powerpack giving you intermittent spark. Hard to diagnose without the right instruments or replacing parts. The OIS sensor isn't too expensive but the powerpack is a bit costly.

Clanton should be able to offer more insights.

When you say you are pecking on the coils, are you removing the plastic cover, or just pecking on the cover?

Re: 1997 Johnson 150 losing fire

i took the flywheel cover and flywheel off this evening and the stator looked good , there was a guy on here told me to check it for cracked places and said most likely if the stator was bad i would see something running off the stator but it looked good to me . i think it might be the power pack but im no boat mech. and would like some input before i spend $150 for a power pack , i found a new cdi power pack for $150 cheaper than anywhere else i found one , it was on the net . thanks for any help clanton

Have you check the ground wires, remove the coils and look at the metal plate that is between the coils and pack, sometimes you will see the burnt spot. If you buy a pack, check with Rapair, I think they have made some inprovments in the pack. They have web site.

do you think the pack is the culprit and yes i have removed and didnt see any burnt spots , just the pecking thing that has me stumped and all ground wires are good

Re: 1997 Johnson 150 losing fire

The fact that you can alter the problem by pecking on the coils points to an intermittent electrical connection somewhere. Have you tried pecking at other places (e.g. on the powerpack or optical sensor)? It might just be the vibration that is affecting a bad connection elsewhere.

You have the OIS ignition system with the optical sensor. Have you tried pecking(!) around this area? Just maybe a faulty optical sensor. Certainly worth checking before you buy a new powerpack.

Re: 1997 Johnson 150 losing fire

the power pack is right behind the coils , the coils is mounted to the power pack with same bolts , yes i have pecked everywhere but pecking the coils is the only results i get , thanks seasport for the input , i would give $1000.00 to know what it is so i could fix it but i dont want to spend $1000.00 trying to fix it and still have same problem

Re: 1997 Johnson 150 losing fire

Tow it to Glasgow, I sure I can fix it for less then 1000.00. Im out of town until late Sat. I looking at wiring diagram now, dont see how tapping the coils, does anything except wiggle bad conection. It sounds like a pack problem, but I would not replace anything without checking the complete ignition system. The tapping also may not do anything, except cause a time delay, and the temp changes on the pack and sensor.

Re: 1997 Johnson 150 losing fire

i dont understand what u mean time delay and temp changes . yesterday me and my buddy went fishing and run the boat for about 45 mins., boat was running great, shut the motor off and started using the trolling motor , we fished this one spot about 1 or 1 1/2 and was going to move to another spot , motor wouldnt start , pecked the coils and fired right up but was missing a little ,when it will run and its missing if you run at about half throttle it will do pretty good but still miss ,if u push it on down to wot it misses so bad it starts jerking and misses really bad , but if u back off to about half throttle like it kinda straightens up a little.

As an alternative, fire up your auxilliary and motor down to NZ and I'll fix it cheaper than clanton ;)
