Hi,

First post of what I hope is many! I have rot concerns. I am looking to purchase a 1997 Four Winns Horizon RS 18' that has been neglected. The engine I am having evaluated by a mechanic before purchase. The vinyl is toast so I assume the boat has been left uncovered for long period of times.

My concern is what other things should I look for in a boat that has obviously been out in the weather for a long period of time? The floor is all fiberglass so I guess I shouldn't be concerned there? Are there stringers or other things I need to be worried about rotting? Hoping this boat has no materials in its construction that will rot, but guessing that is not the case! Thanks for reading.

Just because the deck is fiberglasses does NOT mean you have no rot worries. You should inspect every square inch of the deck and pound the heck out of it. If you find ANY soft spots then you should expect to do a full deck and underdeck restoration of the boat. Sitting unattended for a couple of years can and will reak havoc on a boat. Remember, Boats rot from the Bottom up and it's very difficult to "SEE" what lies below. If there's a ski locker, open it up and look inside. Take a flashlight. I would tread softly and REALLY inspect her carefully. You should also inspect the transom for rot and soft spots. A rubber mallet is a good tool to use to see if you can detect by sound any variance in the solidity of the transom. It won't tell you for sure about rot but can sometimes five you an idea. Look for discoloration around screw or bolt fittings indicating water intrusion. Get on your Back and look under the boat for any major Cracks, Gouges or breaches in the hull. Inspect the trailer. You should expect to have the trailer bearings and brakes services if you will have to haul her home any significant mileage.

also might consider, if the current owners will allow it, to try any unscrew any fasteners in the lower part of the transom (like the speedomer pickup) or any other accessory that the boat might have. check to see if water comes out once the screw is removed, also check the condition of the screw or any wood shavings that come out with it
