Took my recently acquired 1997 90 hp XE90TSLEUA out for the first lake test after doing the usual service. I noted that the Volt meter was showing in excess of 16Volts with the motor running. The battery is brand new never been used and shows a little over 12.5 Volts on the meter. Am I correct in assuming that the voltage regulator is on the fritz. Seems to me that 16Volts will cook a battery.

Depends on which reg system you have.
You could have the water cooled regulator / rectifier located in the top rear of the block.
Or, you could have the small round rectifier only unit that is mounted on the side of the block.

Rectifier only will show 16v. Reg/rectifier should show 14.7 v when charging.

I looked up your motor and it shows you have a rectifier only. The 16 volts won't cook a wet cell battery. Lots of these motors out there.

My error. I looked at the drawings and only saw the regulator/rectifier. My second look and a look at the motor reveals that it does indeed have the rectifier only. The new batteries I have installed are wet cells but of the no maintenance variety. This I deemed necessary as the batteries are all but inaccessible in the center console. If this is going to present a problem I have no issues with fitting the regulator/ rectifier. You input is greatly appreciated.

It's up to you. Run it the way it is or install a reg/rect.

Thanks Guys. If the 16Volts are not going to damage the batteries I think I will leave well alone.
