Just bought a boat with a 1997 2 stroke yamaha 80 horse. The boat starts right up but has a rough idle and appears to be running a little rich. Once you give it some throttle it smooths out and runs great. The previous owner said he had a mechanic that just went through everything and cleaned the carbs. He seemed like a honest guy and said that he thinks it may just need to be adjusted. Do y'all have any ideas of what may be causing this? Thanks

When ever you buy a used outboard, you always do the following, clean the carbs and jets, install a spin on water separating filter, drain the LU gear oil, if there is water in gear oil, or bad/low compression you should not have bought the outboard, replace water pump, which is a hard rubber impeller on an outboard Rough idle could be a partial plugged jet, the idle air fuel mixture screw adjustment is screw it all the way in gently, then back it out what the Manuel says, its about one and a little more turns. 50-1 two stroke oil in gas, replace all on engine fuel filters, ,put thermostat in pan of cold water heat it up slowly what temp does it open ?

Take the carb bowl off, get the largest drill bit that will fit in idle jet tube, gently clean it out.
