Very true. I'm going all new. I only want to do this once. Presently, the motor runs great...except for turning the oil to pudding. I.m guessing my 2 barrel intake is toast, so I'll be getting a new one anyway. Going to a 4 barrel won't really help me much, but if it's cheaper, I might do it. The edelbrock 650 has always been my favorite carb. I'm thinking it would be o.k. as long as I keep the spark arrestor on top of it. we'll see. a lot of work brfor we get to that part. I'm pulling my outdrive tommorow. I'm getting a new long block from Michigan Motorz.
The boat I have i repowered after PO didn't winterize.

The block was cracked in the valley after 2-3 uses that spring crankcase over filled and shot oil all over the engine compartment...exhaust manifolds were cracked. Intake did not look cracked nor did heads but didn't want to chance it so I bought a complete new partial engine package.

9 years later I am so glad I spent the extra for a new engine have had zero issues.

since you have a pre vortec it might be worth upgrading to a vortec and 4 bbl carb. The package I got had 4 bbl intake and an edlebrock 1409 carb (600 cfm marine). I believe a vortec w 4 bbl would be around 290-300 hp

Some of the later truck engines have stainless ones that are good to leave in, otherwise would make sense to swap them.
Always feel like I'm taking crazy pills when I say this, but the plugs on my 2001 were brass, or at least non ferrous gold metal of some sort. The HG was also composite ...

They may be GM makes changes as they see fit and doesnt tell us... You also never know if a wrecking yard engine has been worked on either.

Unfortunately you don't know what is in there till you look.

And we all didn't think you needed pills to be crazy...

I will double check my engine, and my options when I get it out. Thanks for your info!
