the engine runs fine starts and runs great .my problem is i can go where i need to go i can get out and fish , when i pickup to go the boat will start and run fine but when i put it into gear to get up on plane the boat will start running rough and bog down, the kicker is i can push the trim button up or down and the engine will run fine if i let the trim button go it will start running rough again .i can play with the switch for about a mile or so and it will go to running fine without having to play with the trim button but if i turn the engine off i have to start all over again. i have looked for shorted out wires at the controlls but couldnt find any. any ideas on what to look at or do i would greatly appreciate thanks

OK, it the trim button affects it so, it sounds like you need to trace the trim wires and see if they rub any of the ign wires. I would concentrate on the black/yellow spark killer wire, and the yellow/red starter solenoid wire. Also see if the starter spins when you hit the trim switch. if it does, it is likely the yellow/red wire is rubbing somewhere.

BTW - these are just likely guesses.

if you had it out on the water with another person, id check to see if the trim button on the motor cover when used has the same effect on the engines performance, thus isolating if it is in the circuit itself, a short on the motor near a relay or in the trim switch on the handle.....

good luck

I think this is the OIS, if I remember correctly the powerpack requires a voltage source from either the rectifier output or the battery. You said it clears up when you trim up or down? Intermittent? Have you checked charging output. If you have a multimeter hook it up to the battery, pull the emergency stop lanyard and crank the engine a few times to discharge the battery and then hook it back up, with water start the motor and record charging output in volts and amps if you have a ammeter. You might want to check the power trim motor amperage used.

Re: 1997 175 oceanrunner help

OIS pack is powered by the power coil on stator. The only power to pack is on the yell/red wire during starting and that to feed the sensor eye. If you are overcharging or tach is erratic the stator could be overheating and using the trim is drawing down the excess voltage. Using the trim may reduce heat enough to keep power coil output near 18V. The pack also using the power coils output to get a RPM indication and it uses this for the rev limiter,SLOW and advance drop out. If the voltage drops or the clipper in pack fails the pack could be tricked into SLOW or rev limiting. Since this does quit and sort of resets itself ,I would check/test rectifier 1st, stator 2nd and replace pack and eye(CDI) 3rd.

If you decide to replace Power Pack, you may want to use CDI electronics Power Pack. I was reading their's has the ability to set idle and WOT timng the conventional way with a timing light. If you decide your power pack is bad and order the OEM, it requires a special tool from OMC to set them.

Re: 1997 175 oceanrunner help

everything checks out ok the boat is charging fine my rectifier checks out good how do i know if the power packs are good are not. my friend i bought the boat from just had them reolaced 2 yrs ago. i had talked to a mechanic and he said that he thinks it is in the jets on the carbs he told me that these johnsons were known for that he told me when it started acting up to push the choke to see if that cleared it up. i took the boat out this weekend and it didnt help. i pushed the trim on the engine and it would help clear it just like on the on the console .thank you for all the replies.

There is no "them" on power pack, if it has two packs its not a 1997.....

they have wires that need to contact the block when they are mounted...they go under the bolts!!! taking mine aport once i could easily see them going back on wrong
