1996 Tohatsu/Evinrude 9.9 4 stroke oil change

Looks just like a Suzuki Evinrude I worked on a year ago. I confirmed thaqt the LU drain plugs were not the typical 8 mm of the Tohatsu, but rather 10 mm Suzuki size.

My dealer was being a smart-alec telling me Evinrude never made a four stroke 9.9. Sight unseen, he said it was Tohatsu. Is there someplace I can enter the model/serial and get a definitive manufacturer?

Any good J/E dealer should be able to help. That aside, why does the OEM matter? Just buy appropriate Evinrude parts, and you will get the appropriate stuff.

Yeah, my dealer is not close by though. As to why it matters... I'm suspicious about the fuel pump. Its $88 for the rebuild kit from Evinrude. A Tohatsu replacement pump is $9. Now, the money is speaking loudly. Jab me all you like about Chinese crap but there it is.

That pump is specific to the Evinrude.

The Evinrude 4-strokes built for them by Tohatsu didn't start until 2011. So if your Evinrude 9.9 4-stroke is 1996, then it was one built by Suzuki or by Evinrude. Tohatsu parts are not interchangeable with those. And for what it's worth, Tohatsu is not "Chinese crap". Tohatsu's are made in Japan, not China. They are the oldest Japanese outboard company.

Go ahead----try the $9.00 pump.------Post the results as many folks are looking at the very same issue. Look up and compare the shape of the head gasket on a 9.9 Suzuki for 1996 model.------Do the same for TOHATSU for 1996 if you can find a listing for a 1996 TOHATSU 9.9 parts for a 4 stroke.

i have been looking for timing belt for this 9.9 evinrude. its NLA. its hard to find anything as a substytution
