can't do the caliper trick on these engines the carbs do not have any bar holding them together they have to be done bolted to the intake on the engine, I know what you are talking about as most carbs can be done off the engine but not these.

Re: 1996 Seadoo XP runs on land????

Thanks guys!

I'll be taking my engine apart tonight and I'll have a look at what went wrong.

Sloopy: I won't be going back to that dealer. I have no confidence in that dealer.

Jeff: I went with standard Wiseco pistons and had a machine shop hone the cylinders. I'll let you know what I find after I check.

Thanks again.

well there is the problem/// never use forged pistons without a machine shop that knows how to mike each piston and over bore the hole, those expand more than a cast piston and sieze the rings if the jugs are not cut for each one, and each one will vary in size, so loose the wisecos and get cast pistons.

Re: 1996 Seadoo XP runs on land????

Hi Jeff,

I started to take my engine apart last night (btwn running after my 2 year old and friends coming over) I didn't get too far, but I looked at the rear piston through the RAVE valve and noticed some scoring on the piston. These are the Wiseco pistons I spoke of. The scoring appears to be the same as the scoring I had on the original Bombardier pistons.

I looked at the RAVE blade, and I didn't notice any marks on the blade. Could I be clipping the ring even though I don't have any marks on the RAVE blade?

I'm trying to figure this out. Same marks before the rebuild and after the rebuild. No marking on RAVE. The last pistons still had the rings intact. I'm going to find out if the rings on these pistons are intact. I'm wondering if there is something else going on.

Thanks for all of your input.
Frank

no mark on the rave means it was not the cause of the problem, water in the cylinder will do that too.

Re: 1996 Seadoo XP runs on land????

So that brings me to today... I'm able to start the motor on land with no trouble. As soon as I put the machine in the water, I can't start the motor. I've even started the motor on land and backed it into the water, and it will run. If I shut it down and quickly restart it will start. If I shut it down and wait 10 minutes, it won't start. I'm frustrated....and I have no confidence in the dealer.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks.[/QUOTE]

i have the same issue did you ever figure it out? the manual is leading me to believe it is the rev limiter?

Are you still running the cylinders with 135 and 60? Until you fix that problem and get both cylinders up to 150-155 you're not going to have any luck at the lake.

Can you post some pictures of what the cylinders look like? I know that ski inside and out. Will be happy to help you in whatever way I can to get you back on the water.

PS...have you ever had the carbs rebuilt? That could easily cause your engine problems.

no, never had them rebuilt. I got 120 on front and 30 on rear and that was with it running. Dont know what to do first. carbs or timing?

here's what I would recomend.

New top end kit
Rebuilt Carbs
Replace all of the fuel lines, fuel/water seperator, and fuel selector switch

Re: 1996 Seadoo XP runs on land????

I've replaced most the fuel stuff you described already. ill rebuild the carbs and top end kit. do you feel this will clear up the terrible compression of 120 over 30?

a new top end kit of pistons and rings and bored out cylinders will give you 150-155psi for compression. rebuilt carbs and replacing all the fuel lines, etc. will help keep it that way.

Re: 1996 Seadoo XP runs on land????

i dont wana sound like im whining but ive been without work for over 6 months. I dont think i can afford new top end. i can do the carb kit but thats about the limit of budget ill have. the rest goes to fighting foreclosure.
So is there anything i can do just to get the compression better with out new top end kit and boring it out?

Re: 1996 Seadoo XP runs on land????

get a different compression tester to verify your original numbers. if it's the same, unfortunately no, you're looking at a top end rebuild.

Sorry about your financial situation...i hope it gets better.

how do the heads look? if they're chewed up you'll have to replace...luckily you can find those cheap on eBay.

the mag is fine its the pto that got chewed up. there is the compression leak. lol
If i order the 1 piston will i have to bore it out first and if so what size up should i order. the original says it is bore: 2 x .78 and stroke 68
would this be a the correct one and a good price?
