I'm working on a 1996 Nissan 2.5hp for a friend. It has been sitting for years. I cleaned the carb twice, changed the impeller, and changed the lower unit oil. It starts, but won't accellerate at all. I start it in a 5 gallon bucket of water, for lack of a better place. I notice that there is a slight black sort of oily film in the water after running the outboard. Any ideas as to what to do, next? Thanks!

When you cleaned the carburetor, did you put cleaner though every hole followed by compressed air? If not then it might not actually be clean. Thought 2 is it might be a weak spark. Start with the spark plug, then check the coil and other ignition components.

Thanks for the advice! I'll check everything out today (or as soon as I can), and will reply!

Unburned oil in the test tank is normal.
Do an overnight soak of all non rubber bits of the vcarb -- in real carb dip (available at auto parts houses in 1-gal cans). Theb liberally blow out every passage with generic carb spray. Odds are the ignition is fine. What is your actual model (not year)?

The model is NS2.5A. I'm really embarrassed....I was just looking very closely at the carburetor breakdown diagram, and saw something.....I went outside and took the carburetor apart (again), and realized that the main jet was missing! I searched all over, and finally found it! It had dropped into a drawer below my workbench. It is now all back together, and I'll test it as soon as I can! I have lots of things going on right now, so it might not be until after Easter!

I am willing to bet that at least half the people that read this sat back and smiled as they remembered doing something similar.

It happens to all of us from time to time. No worries. Glad you got it!

Ah, the frustration of realizing it was something so simple, combined with the relief that it was something so simple. :)

When stripping down a complete carb, all removed parts should be placed one by one inmediately in a proper container, if closed much better. What would have happened if the OP could not find the part or did not know anything about whether such part was missing. Luckily was found and installed right back from where it was previously removed.

Happy Boating
