Looking at a bass boat with a 1996 mecury 225 offshore with a fresh rebuild. Is this a 25" shaft? If it is, what issues will I be dealing with? No jackplate.

Usually the offshore series are 25" length, as with no jack plate even if mounted in highest hole it will be to long which will cause performance and driving issues. A picture and hull type will really help on this question....

it is on a 2000 Javelin Renegade 20. I see you have a Javelin. I have a 2000 renegade 19 w/ 175 evinrude(99). and yes, I had to rebuild it. It seems like a strange motor for a bass boat.

Putting a 25" lower on a bass boat is kinda like pushing a chain....it just don't work. Even with a jackplate. The problems that it will cause are many. Swap the mid to a 20" inch and you would be good to go. Even with the jackplate you would at best get to about 4 1/2" or 5" below pad. The performance would be extremely poor

You asked "is it a 25"?

Picture or numbers will determine this. Not all "offshore" motors are 25. Some 20's and 30's. Seems like some are "assuming" that is what it is..............Just can't see someone and/or dealer puttin' a 25 on that boat unless there's an undisclosed reason. So do some ore diggin'.

New Mota 005.jpgHere is one way ta tell what it is. On tha down housing at tha "lower" motor mounts. They have a plastic cover being held with two screws. Measure from tha bottom of tha plastic cover to tha cavitation plate. Don't remember tha exact measurements but a 20" they will be real close together. A 25" will be 4 maybe 5" between the mounts and cav. plate. 30" even more. Look close at tha lower mount on this one. Click on it to enlarge. You can see how close tha lower mount bolts are to tha cav. plate......20"
