I was hoping that everyone might be able to help me out? I have twin 1996 johnson ocean runners, both smoke and run way to rich( sparks are continuly wet with oil)I have tested the for a hot enough spark, fuel, filters, low speed adjustment on the carb and still no difference. Also the motors still over heat with new thermostats and waterpumps at full speed. Im runing out of suggestions and any help would be awesome. Other then that the engines check out and run great.

Welcome moparfixer!

Can you give us a HP or model number?

Sounds like saltwater engines? The overheat could be coming from a large salt deposit in the water ways inside the engines. How often do you flush them? Should flush after ever use with fresh water. There are products on the market such as "SaltAway" (believe thats the name) you can use to try and get rid of the deposits.

What plugs are you using in the engines?

Have you checked the recirculation valves? I think your model has them. If they are either blocked or flowing both ways, you could have problems.

If you are running slowly much of the time, you might experiment on your oil. I don't want to start another argument, but I do find the synthetics run cleaner while trolling with both my 140 looper and 115 crossflow.

What plugs/gaps are you using?

Re: 1996 Johnson Ocean runners Probs

Hey thanks for the great advice, the engines are 1996 150hp ocean runners, im currently mixing the oil with the gas at 50:1 but have tried 75:1 and even 100:1 to reduce the richness. Ill have to look in to the recirc valves. As for the over heating i do flush the engines alot with fresh water and the boat sits in my yard and is ran once a week with fresh water. but ill use the salt away again . thanks again Capt. Mike

Since you have the Ocean Runner series, what number was the factory water pump kit that was installed?

There are different kits that look very similar but the wrong one will cause overheats in your type of motor.

Is the "hot horn and lite" coming on and the motor slowing down to about 2500 when it overheats or are you guessing that it runs too hot?

Just could not let this thread slip off the page without knowing what the problem(s) was/were? Any luck?
