I have a 96 Evinrude 90 h.p. outboard. It is sometimes hard to start in the water "under a load" and sometimes it seems to get flooded. It will crank but when I engage the prop it quits. It smokes quite a bit also_Once I get it going it runs pretty good but at any time during the day it might act up after being shut down for awhile.Installing new spark plugs regularly has helped the problem in the past, but they shouldnt have to be changed that often. Out of the water "not under a load" it cranks, idles, and has good throttle response. About 9 months ago I had the carbs rebuilt and sealed by a reputable mechanic. He did a compression check and his results were 105,110,125,125. I just checked them myself and my results were 90,95,105,110. I dont know if my gauge read different than his or what but I would like some opinions about my problem. Are these pressures too low? I let the motor warm up for several minutes in the yard, held the throttle completly open while testing and removed all spark plugs. The plugs looked pretty fouled also. Thanks for any help.

Post the model number so people will know which 96 90HP motor you have.

The numbers can be different with each gauge, so it's not that important, but there is a larger than desired gap between the high and low cylinders.

If the plugs look bad after a short time and keep fouling, try a de-carb to get the compression #'s closer.

We need more info to track down the reason for the dirty plugs and the model number will help.

Decarb is getting a gallon of gas (either premix with oil or if you have oil injection just straight gas) and a can of Seafoam from any auto parts store. Pour 3/4 of the bottle in the gas and the rest into a spray bottle. Run the engine on this mix until it is fully warmed up. Once warmed up, shut it off, pull all the plugs, spray the Seafoam in the spray bottle liberally into each cylinder and replace the plugs. Let sit for 15mins, then restart the engine. It's going to smoke like it's on fire. Spray the rest of the Seafoam in the spray bottle directly into each carb, so the engine is almost stalling. When done hit the water for a WOT spin for approx. 15mins.
That's my take on it anyways, there are other write-ups on how to do it if you just search decarb.
You will need to replace the plugs when you are done doing this.

If there's a great deal of carbon build up it can cause the rings to stick resulting lower than normal compression.

i would do the decarb, and recheck the compression, and yes every guage reads differently.

Decarb, take a can of seafoam put 3/4 of it in the gas tank, with only 1 gallon of premixed gas. put the rest in a spray bottle. start the engine, and let it come up to temperature. then remove plugs, and them some real good shot of seafoam into the cylinders, replace plugs, let sit 15 minutes. restart, and spray the rest of the seafoam into the carbs, so the the motor almost stalls, wait and repeat until the seafoam is gone.then take for a wide open spin. then put in new plugs, ad premixed gas to the tank, and take it for a wide open throttle spin. it is going to smoke like a house on fire, during this process.

afterwards compression.recheck
