1996 Evinrude 150 Running off rinse out OK?

Is it OK to run the enging hose running with no muffs but to the rinse out instead? Or is the rinse out only to rinse out while not running the engine? I am calling the hose fitting near the exhaust the rinse out. Thanks.

I would think you will toast the impeller..use muffs

Way, The owners manual of my '98 Johnny 150 V6 says that "the flush port on the rear of the motor may be used with a hose to flush the motor running or not, tilted or not".

I normally use the flush port to flush the motor when the boat is in the saltwater. I start it and run it a while with the hose connected and water on, and then I tilt the motor up and kill the ignition as it tilts, but let the hose run until the leg is out of the water.


Now on land, the hose in the flush port works OK as as well.

The flush adaptor on the telltale should not be used as a water supply while running the motor. Flow is in the wrong direction and it does not purge air from the pump intake, causing cavitation and impeller overheat. Flush with motor off or run on the muffs. Not in my maunual, but from OMC tech. My motor is a 95 175hp Opro

Thank you all for your replies. I think that now I can speak from experience and as such must side with angus and scaaty. I ran my engine previously on muffs and it pumped water fine. Earlier today I ran it with hose to rinse out. After reading your replies I decided to run it on muffs. It is no longer pumping water. Instead of going out tomorrow for her maiden run(used boat but new to me) I will be trying to locate a dealer with a water pump kit in stock so that perhaps I can go out on Sunday. Run them on muffs.
