Help, im in boaters hell...

When I bought the boat it came equipt with a 150hp Evinrude Ocean Pro as well as a yamaha shifter and keyswitch. I ran the boat for 2 years hardcore and never had a problem.

2 years ago the motor began bucking and stalling almost as if someone turned off the key. The problem had no decernable thing that caused it with the exception of a voltage drop and drag on the motor when I used the power tilt and trim.
I replaced the Powerpack myself and the boat ran ok for a very short period.
Went to Mechanic #1 and had a 2nd Powerpack put on and had the carbs rebuilt. 2nd powerpack ran bad right out of the box. 4 months went by which saw all electrical tests check out and a 3rd powerpack was installed. The battery switch was removed and the cables were replaced. The stator, optic eye, and keyswitch were replaced out of despiration. The motor ran perfect for the mechanic on the lake and I took the boat home.
A few lake trips later the motor started with the stall again and began with a light smoke at start. The boat would run great most of the time but would stall occasionally when trying to get it into geer or when coming off of plane.

I then took it to a second mechanic. Second mechanic did all of the electrical tests he knows and everything checks out perfect. He replaced the head gasket and said the cylinder walls are perfect. He then replaces the bad powerpack (#4) and the boat is back to running good for a very short period. The motor now starts fine until you put it in gear and then 65% of the time it dies out. The other 35% of the time it runs great other then a light smoke.

The boat is now back at mechanic #2 and he is no closer to fixing the issue. After speaking with the good folks and OMC and his peers, he began checking various wiring connections to check for anything that could cause powerpack burn outs. The motor is VERY clean and the compression is perfect.

The only work ive done myself was to cut out excess wiring from under the console and clean it up a bit. I also replaced the very first powerpack. But thats it... I would sell it but who would buy a motor that is having so many problems? Its a shame too because the motor appears to be spotless and im sure this is something stupid and simple but we are all missing it.

fire the engine up on a flusher. Check each plug while running for spark. Pull each plug wire off one at a time. If one side is down then switch your packs. If one plug is not firing then switch your coils. Good Luck

Welcome Z
Unfortunately your motor only has one powerpack so switchin' is not an option. Get yourself a factory service manual (theoutboardwizard.com site can handle this) if you'd like to solve this yourself. Follow the powerpack troubleshooting guide to verify it's operation. Do a compression check on every cyl. . Do a spark check on every cyl. (7/16" gap should get a sharp snap). If your pack is good, the symptoms could still be a fuel issue. A small airleak, hard to detect, could cause your idle issues. Not really sure where you want to go from here, but if you want to solve this, start with the basics I listed above, post the results, and we'll go from there.
I know it can be frustrating, but time and money heals all outboards.
Good luck
