1996 9.9 Johnson, no spark....help!

Hi, working on grandpa's 9.9, has been sitting for a few years. Drained the gas, cleaned the plugs, fired up after a few pulls ran it for about 20 secs then pulled the dead man switch and it shut down. Went out the next day and can't get anything, no burp, cough, backfire...nothing. start testing what I can on my own and seems no resistance ( resistance or continuity?) from the switch, just to make sure I cut the wires and test again,( just the two wires from the switch), definitly nothing. Tried both bypassing the switch and also temp wire in a toggle switch and then sure enough I have a reading like the books says both times, O.K. should fire up now....nope, still no spark what so ever. Got a good zap when I accidently gound out the switch so I believe the CDI is ok right? Tested the plug wires and they seem ok..the part I don't get is it ran one day, shut it down and then nothing..any ideas????? thanks...ken

Did you try disconnecting the kill switch wire? Maybe your dead man switch is defective.

Hi Jim, yes the switch did test as being defective so, I disconected the switch, tried it with just bypassing the switch as well as wiring in a toggle switch and still nothing..... ken

Hi Chief, the model is a J10FREDR I believe this breaks down to johnson/ 10 hp/ four stroke/ rope start/ 1996...thanks in advance for your time and effort...ken

had the same motor and it ran when it wanted to, didnt start all the time but ran fine every now and then.. first changed coil..(discontinued part) and then replaced powerpack and it worked..sold the motor.. was a headache since new.. their are many powerpacks/years that fit

theres a notch on bottom of flywheel that the optical sensor on powerpack goes through. make sure you line it up

O.K.,, heres the update, I have the switch part of the eqaution working, for sure it is working right but still have no spark. Installed new plugs, still no spark. I have a question, what is the sending unit on the side of the block? It has a wire that goes into the CDI box along with the black and yellow power wire. Does it have something to do with temp? shut down if it overheats or something like that???. Also, does anyone have a link to the wiring harness etc for this motor, the year is a 1996 johnson 9.9 10hp version with rope start..I'm having nop luck finding one....thanks..ken

sounds like NINE1 has direct experience, Ken...couple of sites to check out...cdielectronics.com...they'll offer some diagnostic steps for the ignition..iboats..marineengine.com..boats.net....will have diagrams of your system as well as parts prices...if you plan to go further with this motor a factory repair manual will be almost mandantory..try ebay for one...or outboardbooks.com...no seloc or clymer's

Thanks, I have been looking for a manual already but in the mean time was hoping to at least try to narrow it down. I thought somewhere on line there would at least be a wiring diagram so I could find out what that sensor is..ken

same side as filter and oil stick, is the oil switch. this is a discontinued motor... hard to find some parts for.. pray its not the coil..-p.i.t.a- to find

Cool, but what does it do?? does it send a shut down signal or something to the CDI if oil pressure is low or what? thanks...ken

if you'll compare the diagrams and parts no.s for a 1995 johnson J10FREOC..there's a 1995 manual on ebay listed as Johnson/Evinrude repair manual 1995 9.9-15hp..for 4 stroke motors....may work for you

Yes, it will shut off or not start engine if oil is low.

Ok guys I'm having the same problem and don't what to do next - I have a 1996 four stroke Evinrude 9.9 model E10FREDR with no spark. I disconnected the kill switch = still no spark I disconnected the oil sending unit = and on the first pull I got a spark but then no more. What can I try next?
