1996 75hp starting proceedure

I just bought a project boat with a 96 75 hp force by merc. It has been sitting for about three years. I flushed out the fuel and gave it a try. It fired at the first turn of the key but didn't go. The battery I got with it just don't have enough life left in it to really give it a good crankin'. I never got any initial star up instructions so I'm not sure if i'm holding the prime in too long or just not givin it enough gas? ANY help to a newbie is greatly appreciated. I mean the motor looks like new and the initial fire really seems good, I just don't know what I should be doing at star-up. I really feel like a rookie.

Commander 3000 controls??
There is a button ( known as the fast idle or warm up button) in the center of the handle, at its pivot point.
If you push it, you can advance the throttle in neutral.

To start:

Turn on battery.
Open vent on fuel tank (if its a portable tank).
Pump primer bulb till firm.
Push "throttle only" button and advance the throttle about 3/4.
Push in and hold the key in to activate the choke. (it is actually a fuel enrichment valve)
You have to continue holding the key in, for the choke to work.
Turn key, release when it fires or after 4-5 seconds.
Try again if needed.
Be ready to throttle back to 1000-1200 rpm as soon as it fires up.

If it doesn't start after the 2nd try, try starting without the choke, or you may flood it.

Hey, I finally got a chance to give it another whirl. I ended up pulling the carb and spraying out the jet and fuel inlet, I also ran some carb cleaner thru the primer valve. After that it fired right up! Now I just need to replace the impeller. It seems to be pumping water and coming out the exaust, but not the tell-tale. Also water seems to be coming out around the top of the lower unit. I was wondering if maybe the pump tube somehow got loose and water wasn't getting thru the system well so I shut it down for the day to do some more research. Again thanks a bunch and any input is always appreaciated.

What do I do if I have flooded my 1998 Force? I am new to this engine and I think that I flooded it trying to get it started. It fired right up for the previous owner using this exact procedure. We put the battery on a charger overnight in case that was the issue and tried again. It sounds like it is going to start but just doesn't. I found a small pool of fuel under the engine cover. Maybe we primed too much? Choked for too long?
