I've change the water pump of my 1996-97 70 hp Evinrude E70TLEUM 20" shaft outboard motor, and in the process seem to have twisted the shift rod out of its original height. I'm resquesting anyone with any input to verify the correct shift rod height and so far, research have gather:

1) Johnson-Evinrude 60 hp 1978-81 model in neutral (L) 21 23/32" +- 1/32 or 21.72 in (551.7 mm)
2) 1975 - 70 model with “E” model suffix in neutral (L) 21 11/32” +- 1/32 or 21.34 (542 mm)

Also, kindly note that I don't have it's reference manual.
Best. Daniel

So for your motor 21-23/32" is what you set it to.---Measure twice and install once.----And verify that your measuring procedure is correct.----Mistakes can mean many beer tokens wasted.

Thanks for your input. 21-23/32" was also nearest the height in neutral (shift rod hole to flush the lower unit's mounting surface), inadvertently lowered by 2 turns. f n r shifting is now very predictable, with the usual slight thud as it engages.. Much appreciated.
