Howdy folks. I have a bass tracker with the 40HP Force on it. I took it out for a ride last night and it ran really well for about 30min and then it just died. It turns over well, blows clouds of fuel out of the cylinders AND has no spark.

I took off the stator and it has two yellow wires (these go to the regulator says the manual) and then two other wires that go off to the ignition coils. green With white and white with green. The yellow wires are nice and stiff but the green ones are soft like overcooked spagetti and the insulation is pulling away. It also has a 5th wire (black I think) that has been cut off at the stator. I looked up the number and the stator is off of a 75HP force. When I test the resistance between the green wires, there is only 126 ohms and i think it should be 600 ohms.

Maybe relevant info…

The motor had a damaged voltage regulator (cracked corner) on it and I swapped it for another one off of a 70HP force. This was just a cosmetic change because i used the cracked one for 5+ years without issue.

I’m happy to hear any opinions on what people think. Local merc dealer wants 600 for the stator and 500 for a regulator. That is pricey!

Is there any cross referencing charts for this engine? I feel like it might be cheaper to get other parts that could work

This is a picture of the extra wire cut off and the stair taht has some swelling and damage maybe…looks like it was painted over with something black.

Outboardignitiondotcom has troubleshoot chart with values of resistance and voltage output for the stator.
That is where i got the 600ohm spec. Thanks.

Would you rather get a used oem stator from another old Force or a new amazon china special? They are both the same price?

I’m from canada. So a Merc stator is $600 here. Very tough to find a marine parts store that will ship to canada…then the exchange kills me

The voltage regulator/rectifier is $500 here!
There are many rectifier/voltage reg. that you can use check that place named after a rainforest
p.s. I'm from Ontario

Another thing i noticed when I was driving it before it crapped out….the RPM readings were a bit erratic (jumping from 4000 to 7000). As I am reading, it seems lIke the stator might be related to the rpm. Is it fair to say that could have been an indication that it was about to crap out?

I ignored it because I just thought it was being erratic because it was an old outboard…the boat didn’t run any different when the rpms were changing.

As an update….I went to my local guy who has the same motor as mine and got the stator, trigger, regulator/rectifier, coils and the wiring harness for 300. I swapped out the stator and the regulator/rectifier and it purrs like a kitten now.

It does need a slide idle adjustment and then it will be perfect.
