Just installed a new 4.3 motor in my 96 bayliner after going thru trying to do a partial rebuild that didn't work. We got the motor back in took to local shop to try and get the timing set, the guy hooked the purple/white wire to a ground but it didn't apear to change anything, he set timing and we headed to the lake, when running it I get backfire thru carb when I push throtte hard and get some spark knocking at a constant rpm, not sure what to do, I have called my local boat store and they know nothing about setting timing with grounding purple/white wire. Also have two black wires at back of dist not sure were the 2nd one goes. I have one grounded to the module bracket. Just not sure what to do, I'm having a problem finding anone local that knows anything about using the purple/white wire to set timing, everone says that just set timing until it runs correct, according to the book I don't think that will work. Thanks
