I have a rebuilt 1996 200HP Vindicator (rebuilt in 2008, bored 30 over) and the VRO pump went out last week. I launched the boat fine, but after about a quarter mile the "No Oil" light came on. I brought it in right away. Checked the oil, it was fine. Primed it, went back out and it would not plane. The "No Oil" light came on again. I loaded it on a trailer and took it in for repair. The VRO pump was replaced, and it will not plane out like it did before. It takes some time, especially with 2-3 people in the boat (including myself). Is there any correct tuning that should go into this part? The boat also has trouble idling, and often dies when going from forward to reverse, or vice-versa. If I put it in Neutral it will reach 5000-6000 RPMs, but when running it stays under 5000, mostly around 4500 and will barely get over 50MPH. I was getting 5500 and around 60MPH before with no problem, I did lower the jack plate about 3 inches before launching.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I would start with raising the jack plate backup. 3 inches is a lot to drop an engine.

Do a compression test on it to make sure all is okay. If you keep on reving it to 6000 rpm in neutral you may have a surprise coming.

Just so we're clear I do not rev it to 6000 RPM's on a regular basis, I did it for testing purposes. I am going to take it in and get it checked out, thanks for the suggestions.

Followup: This turned into something huge. Had a gasket slip out of place and folded inward, blocking two cylinders. Gas was spewing out all over the place. New gasket covers and gaskets were ordered to complete the motor repair.

Compression test came back at around 140. IS that good/bad/indifferent for this motor?

Thanks,
