1996 150hp evenrude a real challenge ,up to it?

I dont know what to do!I have a 150 carb v6 evenrude that runs perfect untill all of a sudden it locks at 3000 rpm.If im crusing it drops back to 3 grand,if im idleing it goes up to 3 grand with no throtle control. The only way to stop it is to turn off the key.when you restart it it runs fine for 20 seconds and then its back to 3 grand.It will do this over and over again every time you turn it off and start it again at 20 seconds.it runs good until it does it.ice cold it takes anywhere from 2 to 15 minutes to act up.I have two motors so its not gas.some one help PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!<br /><br />------------------<br />ED

Replace the overheat temp sensor (providing the thing is cool).

Hi saw this post about 150 evenrude locking up at 3000 rpms. I wondered if your suggestion to replace the overtemp switch solved this members problem. We have a 98 150 johnson doing a similar number. Thanks

TO DESERTMARINER NO THE OVERHEAT SENDING UNIT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM BUT I DID FIX IT .I WOULD LIKE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT IT THE FIX WAS VERY EASY AND COST ABOUT 35 DOLLARS IT HAS BEEN RUNNING GREAT EVER SINCE EMAIL ME AT WHIPLASH9752@AOL.COM OR CALL ME AT 302-3225782.IM TRYING TO LEARN ALL I CAN ABOUT THESE MOTORS AND I WANT TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOUR MOTOR IS DOING.

my evenrude has the optical ignition system and at different inconsistant intervals the timing sensor would break down causing the timming to jump causing the rpms to lock at 3000 replacing the sensor is easy enough to do on the water and cost about 35 dollars hope this helps everyone as this problem stumped me and the shops for three months
