Hi,

I have a Johnson 130hp outboard blowing the 20 amp fuse in the motor when I turn the key to the on position. I figured out the wire that was causing the ground, but have no idea what it does. It's a purple wire and goes from the ignition to the motor. On the back of the motor it shows to be wire # "2." I unhooked the wire from the ignition and the boat started. Can someone tell me what this purple wire does?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Purple is ign accessory. When the ign switch is in the on position it provides power to the voltage regulator, all gauges on the dashboard, the OMS pump (if it is a 4 wire pump) and maybe some other things. I recomend you trace all the purple wiring on the motor, and then move onto the boat wiring harness. Look for melted burned or scraped wiring.

I would look up under the dash...purple goes to tach, warning horn, other electronics. Since you unhooked it at the ignition (your post), it does not necessarily mean the problem is at the motor.

Look for a short between the purple and a ground somewhere.
