Well it wasn't doing anything at all if the wires were not plugged in.
The wires will be one black, and one tan with an orange stripe.
They will be together in some sort of connector, and if I remember right, the connector is unique in that it only fits the vacuum switch.
One other thing to think about....air leaks. A leak on the inlet side of the fuel pump can suck in air. A leak on the outlet side of the fuel pump will expel fuel, but never suck in air. That side is under pressure. So, if your vacuum switch was leaking, you could have been sucking air in there while running.
