I have a 95 Four Winns Sundowner 5.8 OMC Penta Outdrive product code 3868175
Took it out first time this season, overheated at idle after about 15-20 minutes
Changed thermostat, no effect. Pulled hoses to belt driven pump no water flowing in or out at all. Pulled the belt-driven Volvo water pump - impellor was in pieces. Guessing since there was no water flowing to that pump that the toasted impellor might be a symptom of no water flowing to the pump rather than the cause of overheating.
Removed rear cover but no visible impellor to check. How is the water picked up and sent to the belt-driven Volvo pump. I've used water going into earmuffs to supply water. Does it make a difference whether inflow on muffs is on left or right side - wouldn't think so.
Just not sure where to go next on this

That pump is what pumps cooling water.

So fix the pump, find all the pieces of the damaged impeller and replace all the rubber bits in your exhaust system that you burned up with no water.

Hope you are not trying to run the motor in a bucket. Always use muffs or launch the boat

The belt driven pump is the only raw water pump. It is mounted below the water line so it self primes. It changed from the drive mounted pump with the joint venture with Volvo in '94. You basically have a Volvo Cobra SX-M drive, with the pump on the engine.

It doesn't matter what side the hose is on when using muffs.

Thanks, appreciate it. I always use muffs when running engine out of water

Appreciate the education on this stuff - invaluable to this newbie boater
