1995 E40TLEOD on a 1995 Hydra-Sports Z255

The boat & motor were sold to me by my Dad in 2005 after some time sitting up. I rebuilt the carbs and did Linc-N-Sync per the factory manual at that time and the motor's been running well.

I have had some intermittent starting problems over the last 6 months that I traced to a bad powerpack, which I replaced last week.
In the search for the problem, I also:
1 Disassembled the keyswitch & function tested it per the manual - OK
2 Checked the coil resistance per the manual - OK - manual suggested PP
The spark followed the coil output when I swapped cylinder leads
3 Checked the stator resistance - OK - manual suggested PP

Now the motor will not start on mufflers and backfires when the choke is applied. I've never had problems with backfires previouslyon the muffs or in the water. I'm sure I need to check the timing, but wondered how I could suddenly have an issue like this. Any suggestions? THANKS!

You probably got the leads mixed up when you were swapping the coils.

I considered that as well...I was somewhat frustrated and walked away from it on Saturday. I'll recheck the PP to coil & coil to plug connections. Thanks.

If you have an OMC power pack the leads should be color coded. the top lead should be orange with blue stripe and the bottom lead shoud be orage with a green stripe.
