I've been doing my research trying to trouble shoot some issues I'm having with a 1995evinrude 175. I have found this site to be very informative and most of what i read i find helpful but also raises more questions in my mind.
We got the boat last summer and I noticed shortly after that the tach would be irradic and that the volt guage would read about 18v wot. Ultamtely the tack stop responding. By the end of the summer it became harder and harder to start and in the fall it seemed like I would loose spark in all cylinders. I'm wondering if I should focus on one part replacement for the charging/tack issue and another for the spark. I'm wondering if during my attempts starting this I've over heated the starter too many times and now it's not meeting the 300 rpm to satisfy the quick start default. Therefore it won't send spark.
Also, is it odd that when it would start before that it would start with or with out the safety lanyard in place, but would die if it was in and I pulled it out?

your regulator/rectifier has probably damaged your stator. you need to order the dva adapter in the link below in my sig, and then follow the troubleshooting instructions in the free troubleshooting guide. you probably need a new rectifier/regulator and a new stator, I would probably go ahead and replace the power pack and if it is the OIS motor, I would replace the optical sensor and get the gray inductive plug wires, I prefer CDI parts and get them from boatfix.com. I think they may offer a kit with all of the above mentioned items, give them a phone call and see.

Thanks captain. But rather than just start replacing parts is there a way to trouble shoot this to narrow down the problem?

Ok. So I go to pull the boat out of the lake to work on it and I had no spark. Either side. I was able to check the kill side of the wiring and that seemed fine. As a last ditch effort to get it starter I worked the trim switch rapidly to make the engine shake violently. Turned the key and she fired right up. Clearly something is loose. Has anyone had this problem before? Where to start? I already unplugged and plugged the wires I could get at. I did notice my regulator looked like it had gotten hot. I tapped on it before and it didn't get me spark. My tach still didn't work when running.

heaven rude if you are truly producing 18volts are wot then your regulator/rectifier has a problem and thats going to toast some very expensive parts. the fact that the tach has already quit might be a bad sign and your battery is proberly real unhappy

you really need to replace the rectifier/regulator, I recommend CDI parts from boatfix.com...you need to disconnect your current rectifier and DVA test your stator and power pack. if you replace power pack make sure you get the gray plug wires and replace the optical sensor as well.

Ok. I replaced the recifier, stator, and electronic eye. I have good charging and have my tach back. Unfortunately I still have intermintent spark. If I quickly toggle the power trim up/down rapidly the spark will come back. I've checked the wiring for a short or growing issue. I removed the wires to eliminate the kill switch. Would a power pack act this way? Could the starter solenoid not be energizing the ignition?
