Hi All,

My 1995 90hp force will not charge the battery. The marina that repaired it, replaced the stator, coils, altenator and a few other parts and it still will not charge the battery. All electricals have been replaced. I will charge the battery on a battery charger and it will be good for two or three trips around the lake. I listen to a radio when I am on the lake and use my running lights when I come in after sunset.
The marina has had the boat out three times trying to figure out the problem and can't figure it out. Now I took my own voltage meter and while the engine was running I pulled the battery cables off to check the amps coming off the motor. (reading .006 amps)The mechanic that worked on the motor said I would fry the stator and altenator instantenously by pulling off the battery cables. Is this true?
The boat runs like a champ just will not charge the battery. (I have two new batteries)
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Dan

Probably was fixed at one time, but with your test procedures probably popped the rectifier, or regulator circuit.

Re: 1995 90hp Force charging problem

As Yepblaze said, it probably blew the rectifier/regulator (one piece on your motor I THINK). Luckily, this is the least expensive part of the charging circuit.
The way to test the charging in the future, is to leave the system hooked-up, and use the DC volt setting of your meter, engine running, and watch the voltage for 13.8VDC to 15VDC running, 12 VDC not running.
Most outboard charging circuits are lacking, even on some of the later models, charging at rates as low as 4amps. Kinda useless, really, when you are drawing 5-10AMPS for the radio,3-5AMPS for the fishfinder, and so on. Hopefully, it's notinng major, like the recitfier/regulator or a corroded connector.
