Hi Everyone,

I have a project boat that after 3 years of replacing the interior is nearly water ready. When it was put away last the engine was fogged and winterized but now at the mechanics it seems water made it into the carb and it is now shot.

The shop quoted $1,500 (Canadian) for a rebuilt replacement. I found a rebuilt in Cincinnati for $1,100 with no idea what duties and taxes would be.

The original was 1347-9661A3 replaced with 18-7605-1. I don’t want to be cheap but wondering if there’s any way to find if there’s any other model #’s compatible? This one seems tricky to track down which seems odd given the number of these engines out there.

Thanks for any help.

What???!!!!
Is this a Mercarb 2 bbl? Why not remove the carb yourself & have it rebuilt at a classic car shop or do it yourself? I’d want to see the insides first…
$1500
Highway robbery
You can get brand new Holley or Edelbrock 4 bbls for less than that! As in, half as much

Frost damage. Seems water got inside and froze, cracking the housing.

Slowly resigning myself to spending my kids college money on the part (found a used one on eBay for $300 with no bottom gasket)

Drop a 4bbl manifold and an Edelbrock 1409 on... Still cheaper than what you were quoted. $1,500 for a 2bbl carb is beyond highway robbery...

Fair, is it a drop in replacement though, or does it need a new intake as well?

A new 4 barrel carb and intake will set you back less than $1000

Watching auction sites and posting sites and you can find good, used for half that.

$1500 for a carb means you better get kissed, because you just got shafted

Summit has a marine 4 barrel carburetor @$480.00. Part # jet-33002
Intake manifolds by Professional Products for under $240.00. Something to think about if you have a way to get it to Canada without paying duty.

What in trying to find out is do I need to buy a new manifold for a 4 bbl or will a 4 bbl like the 1406 bolt onto the old manifold?

I’ve spent days on the internet trying to get smart on this. Thanks to supply chains, there just aren’t 2bbls out there, so the one I need is market priced at $1500. The 4bbls are cheaper but if they need new intakes and kits, that cost quickly gets to $1,500.

I’m not trying to milk more out of the engine, just trying to get back on the water without getting screwed too badly.

Thanks

As every post has stated, you need a 4 barrel manifold if you switch to a 4 barrel carb. And the manifold should match the carb design, spread bore versus square bore, or it will cost more with an adapter as well.

You may be able to find a used manifold on fleabay or from a boat mechanic that is sitting around.

Just post a pic of your manifold; some were 2bbl only some were a 4 bbl with an adapter to fit a 2bbl carb. Remove the adapter & you can fit the 4bbl. I for one would always want a 4bbl in a marine inboard application.
Just remember that any carb you get has to be a marine unit. They ARE different. My thought would be even if I had to get a used GM cast iron 4 bbl intake I’d buy a new Edelbrock 1409 carb, or Holley 4160. $1500 for what’s an ancient 2bbl Rochester 2GV is a complete waste of money and won’t allow the engine to perform its best.
I found a couple of spare GM marine 4 bbl intakes for my 4.3 on eBay.

That’s what I’m looking for. Thanks. I’ll go take a pic of the manifold today

So to close off the thread, finally searched the engine and carb and figured out this engine was factory shipped with a 4bbl. Edelbrock 1409 Marine with Merc Quadrajet intake adapter kit ordered and on the way.

Thanks everyone, it’s been a learning experience

Ayuh,..... The factory 4bbl. is a Merc/ Weber carb, that is Exactly the same as the Edelbrock,....
'n those carbs are a combo-bolt pattern, so you really don't need the adapter,....
The 1409/ Merc-Weber is in fact a spread-bore, in that the primaries are smaller than the secondaries, just not as extreme as the Quadra-jets,....

Great carb that is easy to work on. Its one issue, that I have never suffered from but other talk about, is dribbling fuel down the intake when shutdown warm. Other than that, more companies have built the 1409 than not. Seems almost everyone got in on a copy.

The install instructions called for an adapter kit for the quadrajet intake, specifically this one (https://www.tdotperformance.ca/edelbrock-2697-carburetor-adapters.html).

I figure if it’s not needed, 30 day return policy. If it is needed, well, I’ll have it at least.

Holley's 500cfm 2300 2bbl is pretty much the Perfect size for 5 liter spinning 5000rpm. Holley likely makes an adapter for fitting it on a Rochester 2bbl mounting pad.
