0B comes up as:

MERCURY - ( 35 H.P. (1988 ))
Serial No: 0B341585 Model No: 1035312BD

0G comes up as:

MARINER - ( 9.9 H.P. (1996 ))
Serial No: 0G341585 Model No: 7010201ED

Gerry

Gerry, where did you get those readings? I found a Mariner website that listed parts right here:
Parts Catalog | Mercury Marine

I ran it and it says OB341585 IS A 45 HP... just no year?

OB341485 is the serial number. I mistyped it. Can you look that one up Gerry?

You're awesome, thanks Gerry. Stupid question... would this take 2 cycle if it's oil injected and would the oil holder be under the engine hood? Just pour in 2 cycle everytime I fill up until it's not on low?

You may want to question whether or not you continue to use the Auto-Blend system. Some swear by it while others loathe it and immediately remove it in favour of pre mixing:

See the system components in the parts list under AUTO-BLEND

I am probably not the best person to ask as the two injection engines I have here have both had the systems removed from day one.

I'm in that camp! Seen a few too many good 2-stroke engines burned down from oil injection system malfunctions to trust them.

You can use regular 2 cycle oil, though some would argue that it's best to get oil designed for injection systems. That may be more of a marketing thing than having much basis in fact. Given the probable outcome of how you discover you're wrong though...is it worth chancing?
You would be wise to find out how much oil it consumes either by researching online or keeping an eye on it yourself, then filling accordingly. You will probably find it a good practice to fill it every time you fuel up, but then it all depends how large your fuel tank is.

It will likely be close to the 50:1 ratio premixed runs, so if you use 5 gallons of gas, you should expect it to go though about 13 oz (100 ml) of oil.

This pending boat purchase is becoming quite a mystery...

So, the marina he gets it serviced at says that motor is a 95-96, however the serial numbers reveal it's an 88 online and with Gerry's help.

Second, it says 'oil injected' on the motor, but the seller cannot locate an oil reservoir anywhere within the tank. The marina told him it mixes within the onboard tank. He's owned the boat 1 year, but is selling to upgrade boats. He's never fueled it and uses it very little, so the Marina has topped it off and winterized it.

I'm beyond confused. Could the previous owner have taken out the oil reservoir in the tank?

To clear up a few things, if the marina thinks this a 95-96 motor they have no clue, and the oil does not "mix in the tank", there is either an oil reservoir under the cowl, or a separate oil tank located someplace in the boat. That is unless the oil injection has already been removed, and in that case the motor has already been damaged because the current owner doesn?t add oil to the gas. Finding the oil tank shouldn't take more than 5 minutes, it is very simple.

And unless you know all the details and understand everything completely without their help you shouldn't do business with them. And obviously you don't, so start looking someplace else.

Yes I wouldn't touch it with a 10 ft pole unless I could do a dry compression test myself! Even then I'd be hesitant. As you say, something doesn't seem to add up.

Re: 1995 45 HP Mariner Outboard- good motor?

Okay, update. Marina said it is INDEED a 1980s motor. Serial number Gerry reveals is a 1988 with 45 hp. However, the marina said there is no oil injection system on this motor and the owner may have removed it. It has an onboard tank and mixes 50:1. Make sense? Would it be 50:1 two-cycle?

Here's a hypothetical question, lets say the oil injection system is STILL in the motor and the owner had been premixing. Would this hurt the engine?

Also, excuse the novice question, but is a 2 stroke motor same as 2 cycle? In other words, what motor is this 88 mercury 45 horse? A 2 cycle or 4 stroke or what? I know it uses a 50:1 oil, but is that 2 cycle oil? Lost on this....

The Marina, as I stated thinks that the previous owner took out the OIL INJECTION system (if it ever had one), as it's now premixed on board in the tank. BUT, when I inspect it, how do I tell if it is OIL injected- where would the oil reservoir be?

I'm checking this boat out very soon... and driving a couple of hours, so your help as much as possible is greatly appreciated!
