1995 3.0 Volvo Compression?

Last weekend my engine overheated because of a bad impeller so I thought I would check the compression before I do anything else. The results were 140-150-180-75. What do you guys think may be the problem most likely. Could I get lucky enough to have it only be the head gasket. If it needs a complete overhaul is it best to look for a long block somewhere or I would be open to any other options you could bring to my attention. Thanks for any advice in advance. I am guessing the compression should be 180 all the way across.

Do a leakdown test to find where it's leaking.

Well here is what I just tried. I put 120psi into the 75 lb cylinder from my air compressor using the fittings from my compression guage. I hooked it up and tried to find any kind of leakage but I was unsuccessful. The cylinder was at top dead center when I tried this. Am I doing something wrong to make this kind of test worthwhile?

I just ordered the tool to perform the leak down test from the auto parts store. I should have it tomorrow and then I can see what I can come up with.

Re: 1995 3.0 Volvo Compression?

Well now I have something to report. Last night I hooked the garden hose up to the output of the sea water pump becasue I could not take the suspense any more and started the engine. It started a little rough the first time but quickly pulled out of it and ran great just like before this incidident. It ran up to normal temp and stayed there, idled smooth and ran smooth at higher rpm's also. After running the engine for 15 minutes of so I checked the compression on all 4 cylingers with my compression guage and I came up with 145-145-140-140 which was kind of puzzeling to me. I can also find no signs of water leaks on the engine but the big rubber boot that couples the exhaust behind the engine doues leak so I will have to repair that. Has anyone else heard of this type of stuff happening before?

Whats compression supposed to be? 13 year old boat. Maybe a little blow bye? New head gasket maybe with a trip to the machine shop with the head to get trued, valve seats freshen up.

Did the impeller break up? If yes get all the pieces?
