1995 225hp Evinrude OP - Forward works but No Reverse

I recently bought this boat that has a 1995 225hp Evinrude Ocean Pro motor on it. When i sea trialed the boat i noticed that it did not have very much reverse (just enough to barely move the boat almost like the power of a trolling motor). When i asked the previous owner he said he made an adjustment to back off the reverse because his wife was bad about throttling the reverse to much. I figured this was something i could fix whether it was the throttle cables or whatever.

The motor goes in and out of gear perfectly, no slipping or grinding. Forward throttle seems fine, it revs up and pushes the boat 35-40 mph. In reverse it does not rev and has one slow speed no matter how much i put the throttle control down.

i am going to replace the throttle cable and gear cable today to see if that fixes it but i was curious if there is an adjustment on the throttle mechanisim on the motor. is it possible to turn down the reverse throttle without messing with the forward throttle?

They are adjustable!!
Even a 'new' cables need adjustment!

1. how do you adjust the cables correctly

2. would the cable adjustment be the issue with the reverse or is there a throttle adjustment that needs to be made on the throttle mechanisim

If you have a binnacle mt control box the shift cable may be in the wrong mounting hole. It has to go in the inner hole closest to the pivot point of the handle.

Unless he was gonna throw his wife in the deal he shoulda reset the cables for ya. Maybe if she was good lookn tho...
