I was on the lake last week and my 1995 merc 175 went started hitting on 3 cylinders. I turned around to head for the ramp. I ran it till it died and used the trolling motor to get back. I was 90% sure it was the switch box. To cut it short I installed both boxes with the wrong part number. When I started it, it popped right off and sounded good. Hooked up the water hose and started it again. The ignition switch started beeping fast, The trim would only go up, not down and it got to where it just blows the fuse next to the starter relay that pretty much powers everything. Question is if I put the right boxes on do you think I did any damage to the electrical system?

Ignition boxes do not use 12v. You have other problem. What was the number of wrong box ?

332-7778A12 is what I installed. 332-7778A10 is what was in it. Evidently the 332-7778A10 is discontinued and the 214-7778R 2 Mercury Mariner Racing Switch Box is the replacement. I'll do some more checking on that. I'm going to take it all apart again and make sure on my wiring. It's just strange that it happened at the same time.

tha 12 is justa superseded number as tha years went by.. tha original switch box (like in 1976 ) was 332 7778 A1.. as long as as it is a 332 7778 A whatever its all good for your motor.. think last number for producton (and maybe ProMax, 260's) was A14...

So when I did replace the boxes it did start and run fine for about 5 seconds and then I shut it off. As for everything else the ignition beeping fast, the tilt trim went from just working up to not at all and to the blowing of the fuse by the starter relay. The fuse blows instantly when it is installed now, I'll be bringing it how this weekend to look at it again. Thanks so much for your help on this.

So yes I messed up. Took a good look at it and noticed a green wire going where it shouldn't. Turns out I had crushed the trim wire between the two switch box's and created the ground. Thanks much again.
