The VRO is no longer w/ the motor. I'm premixing the gas with oil using the recommended 50:1 ratio.

Well got on there today after letting it sit for a day without starting it. It took awhile to start in the barrell but I finally got it running. When it did start, it was idling really low, and really wouldn't stay cranked for more than 30 seconds. After a few times with that, I put the muffs on and tried it. Basically the same thing, would start a little easier, but would idle low and not stay cranked.

Re: 1994 johnson 40 hp...got me stumped

Today I starte the motor up and while idling I unplugged the spark plug wire from the spark plug in the top cylinder. It made no difference in how the engine ran. Plugged it back in and unplugged the bottom wire from that plug. The motor completely stopped. So I put the gap tester on it, and never got a spark from the top plug. So then I switched the orange wires from the power pack to the coil to see if it would run. Only backfired on me. I figured if the bottom cylinder would fire when I switched these then the coil would prve to be bad. And if the top cylinder would fire then the pack would prove to be bad. But when neither fired, I was at a loss again.

You can't just switch the wires. Physically swap the coils and see if the problem follows. If it does then just replace the bad coil. If it stays on that cylinder then you need to test your powerpack.
