1994 Evinrude 28 HP Dies When Throttled Up.

I recently purchased a used pontoon with a 28 horse Evinrude. I have changed plugs, cleaned out gas tank, purchased new fuel line/bulb assembly, cleaned carb. but motor still stalls. It will run for about 20-30 seconds.... it will then stall when I throttle it up or even if I don't do anything. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I don't know what to try next.

Sorry to hear of your problem mate.<br />I once had a 35 horse Johnson that experienced similar problems. I dont know if this will help in your case but it did help me. We found the problem to be a combination of incorrect timing and faulty coil packs.<br />Hope this helps you.<br /><br />Good luck mate.<br />Jass.

Hey Banaut,<br />Based on what you've told us, I'd guess you have a fuel related problem. When you cleaned your carb(s), did you take it apart & thoroughly clean it? It sounds like the float (needle & seat) is sticking. Have you tried pumping the bulb when it's running? If that will keep her going it indicates a faulty fuel pump. Check it out & get back to us if the problem persists.<br />Backlash

Along with what Backlash gave you to look into, next trip out,try this;<br />Remove the gas cap. If it cures the problem,the tank vent is blocked or closed.<br />Also, if these are portable tanks,the fuel pickup hose has an anti-syphon valve in it (unless it has been removed) . It will be at the top.These valves have been known to drive folks batty at sea.<br />If it is in there, take it out. There have also been a number of primer bulbs placed on the market by the thousands that are defective. Try changing-out the primer bulb.<br />Let us know how you make out.

You may have to "up" the idle some. We had the same problem until we adjusted the idle. Good Luck.
