Hello All. New to your forum and new to boating. I have my first boat, a 1994 Rinker Captiva 180 runabout. My friend SmokeOnTheWater told me about iboats and suggested I get on here. I'll inspect it soon, but the general conscensus is that the transom is in need of replacement. I got the boat w/trailer for a screaming deal that was too good to pass up from a friend last year. Bought it late last summer but had it out twice and it runs great, no problems.

I'm not made of money so later this summer I'll tackle replacing the transom. SmokeOnTheWater said you guys can steer me in the right direction. He already outlined best he could what I am getting into. Guess what I'm looking for is tips and tricks and possible reference material for this job. What is the best way to support the upper shell when seperating and lifting? What are the best materials to use to do the job right? What is the best manner to shape the new marine board to the stern?

I'm new to boats and boating, but I'm good with tools, a hard worker, and have the stomach for taking on big jobs like this. Where do you think I should start?

Thanks.

Re: 1994 Captiva 180 stern repair.

Don's has helpful tips posted at the top of the Restoration forum homepage

There are lots of good threads out there w/ tons of info, some specific to the boat thread it's posted in, others more generic to most boats. There is a forum homepage for Completed Projects, good info in those.

Read read read & watch as many resto vids as possible. There are also some rebuild videos on YouTube that are helpful to 'see' the work done to compliment the reading.

oops hull extension thread has an index at the front, read through some of it

Friscoboater has a great threads & a good YouTube channel that are really well done. His threads & YouTube channel are all accessible with the links in his signature at the bottom of all of his posts. His videos really brought everything together so it all made more sense to me.

And many more. There maybe some helpful info in the Rinkers owners group, at the bottom of the Restoration homepage. And there are several 'Similar threads' posted by the iBoats server at the bottom of your thread.

Welcome! And when you get her into dry dock, give us tons of pix! But for now, any old crummy cellphone pix will work to give us a shot of her!

Re: 1994 Captiva 170 stern repair.

Hello All.

Thanks JB for the tips. I'll check out all those suggestions as time allows. I'm sorry I haven't posted up. Been busy getting a bedroom together for our first little one. She is due next month so the clock is ticking.

Is there a way to change the title of this thread that I started? I realized today that our boat is a 170, not a 180. Oops. If a forum admin sees this, please let me know if the name can be updated/changed. Thank you.

I've attached some pics. I have a couple of the stern, but I'll have to post them up seperately as I attached five pics already. I'll put the other pics in another post. Don't know if it will come through in the pics, kind of hard to tell, but the stern has a pretty good curve to it out to the sides. Hoping someone can tell me for sure that the factory stern plywood board doesn't go all the way to the crazy curved corners. Looks like it would be difficult to get that same curve into a replacement board(s). Then again, I've never done this before so perhaps it isn't as hard as I think it is. Are some of the stern filling materials I've seen advertised any good or are they inferior to a new stern board?

The boat needs a good scrubbing. It looked pretty good last summer, but after sitting in the car port with a torn cover it has gotten pretty dirty.

Need some advice. A local guy who comes recommended to me by a friend can make a custom boat cover for $500. He does not use snaps like the current worn out cover, but uses a draw string. Another option is to purchase one of the many boat covers off the internet that are listed as fitting properly. They seem to use tie down strapes that fasten to the trailer. Suggestions on which way you would go and why? If I order from the internet, what is the preferred fabric?

The trailer needs a little attention. A few surface rust spots I need to sand down and paint. What kind of paint is available for boat trailers? Someone told me new boards with carpet already on them are available for the trailer. Are there some types I should avoid?

Sorry for all the questions. I should had searched the forums for answers first. I'll do that now.

BTW, please forgive the neglected landscaping in the pics.

Many thanks.
