I am considering purchasing a 1994 Bayliner Capri 1750 LS. Appears to be in great shape and has less than 200 hours of use on it. I am wondering if there have been any consistent problems or reliability issues with this boat that I should be aware of before purchasing. Any wisdom or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Where to start with this post? Generally hours of engine use aren't considered when a boat is this old. Overall condition verified by someone who may have a bit more experience is the key. Bayliners and especially ones this old tend to suffer from multiple first owners abusing and neglecting them given their ultra low budget pricing. I actually like the look of the 1990's Bayliners but see them neglected far more often than not. People tend to not understand the simple physics of the world we live in and store them incorrectly in the elements and defer needed maintainance. Afterall boats are made to get wet right? Boats such as this one have wood stringers and floor among other parts which rot and can easily go unnoticed until you do and then you have a project on your hands. This question has literally been asked a thousand times on iBoats. Can you post some pictures? Which engine does it have? Does the owner have records of maintainance?

Welcome to IBOATS.

Do you have much experience with being able to do a mechanical check on the engine/outdrive yourself?

Do you know how to check the transom, stringers, etc. for wood rot or issues with a fiberglass hull?

If the answers to those are something like "not really", then even though this is an entry level boat you might consider wanting to spend the few hundred dollars and have inspections/surveys done to give you some assurance other than what you can visually see.

If the current owner is hesitant about having either of those items done, then that might be a sign to continue looking elsewhere.

Welcome aboard Chrisbe:

Step one: pictures if you can or link to the seller's ad.

Step two: what kinda' engine/drive does it have?

After that tell us how much experience you have with boats and where you'll be running it. Then stand back, you'll get more opinions than you hoped for!

With any used boat - and this one would be sneaking up on 15 or 20 years old - it's all about care and condition. A well cared for Bayliner may be a much better boat than an abused Chris Craft. As suggested above, you may want to look into a local marine mechanic and pay him to help you check it out.

Welcome to iboats!

You need to check carefully for any signs of rot in the wood "bones" of the boat. This will usually first be obvious as a soft spot in the cockpit sole (aka "deck").

What is the brand of the outdrive and motor? If it's OMC, you may have problems finding anyone to work on it.
