I noticed some water dripping from the thermostat cover so I resealed it. When I ran the motor, there were some sparks coming from the ignition module toward the engine. I am assuming the unit got some water on it from the leak.

Will this dry out and be OK?

It seems like it should be able to get a little wet without damage, but I don't know.

Module? Or, one of the coils?

Either way, make sure all the attaching bolts are tight and clean.

DJ: It is called the ignition module, a retangular black box (oriented vertically), and is bolted to the starboard side of the motor near the rear. The wires coming out it go to many places, including two that are connected to wires that connect to the spark plugs. Also, I can see the bottom of a pc board on it.

Re: 1994 9.9hp Evinrude sparks

I pulled the old ignition module (also called a power pack)and saw a bit of corrosion where the ground wire contacted the motor under one of the unit's mounting bolt. I cleaned it off and instaled a new power pack. However, when I ran the engine, I still got sparks jumping around at the ground wire connection to the motor. I know the wire is clean and tight. The sparks are somewhat intermittant. Any ideas? I'm baffled.

rebars...is the ground lead between the power pack and head or does the lead lay on top of the pack with the mounting bolt going through the lead then the packs mounting hole and into the block?

What I'm getting at is, the ground lead should be laying against a clean area of the block.

OBJ...the lead is directly against the block, then a fiber washer, then the pack, with the bolt going through all. I installed it the way it was before.

OK...just as long as the ground area on the block was shiney clean, should be OK.

The sparks apeared to jump from the ground lead back to the pack, so I moved the ground lead to another bolt, away from the power pack, and that seemed to have done the trick. Weird. The motor runs without the sparks now.

Any place on the pack exposing the circuit board or any metal for the spark to jump from/too? If a ground connection is not well made or dirty, on occasion you can see a little spark around the connection.....just had one like that on an ignition coil ground. Cleaned it up and no more spark. Yeah....little wierd.

How are you able to reach the bottom bolt? I cannot get anything down there 1993 9.9 jhonson. I am tempted to cut a hole to gain access to that bolt šŸ˜Ŗ
